The System

The information phase overlaps every other phase of the system.

Take information...

Look all around you. Scan to the front and sides. Use your mirrors at the appropriate points in the system.

Use information..

"Read the road ahead like a detective novel. The road markings are the punctuation, not only in white paint, but also black tyre marks left by the late braking of other vehicles"[http://www/driving.co.uk]

Using the information you have gathered, plan how to deal with the identified hazards and make plans for dealing with the unexpected. Decide on your next action using the system as a guide. If new hazards arise consider whether you need to re-run the system from an earlier phase

Give information..

If you have decided a signal could help other road users, give it; remember other road users include pedestrians and cyclists. Options include indicators, arm signals, horn and flashing your head lights(be wary as some road users may interpret as a sign to proceed!). Sound your horn whenever it could benefit other road users, no matter what stage of the system you are at. Generally the earlier the warning the greater the benefit.

Position

Positioning provides some indication of your intended course. Keeping a cushion of space will enable you more time to react.

Position yourself so that you can pass the hazard/s safely and smoothly.

Take account of other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and children.

Speed

Adjust your speed as necessary. Use the accelerator, brake or (when necessary to avoid skidding) gears to give you the speed which will enable you to complete the manoeuvre. Make good use of acceleration sense.

Aim to make all adjustments in speed smoothly and steadily by early anticipation.

Gear

Once you have the right speed for the circumstances, engage the correct gear for that speed.

Acceleration

Taking account of your speed, other road users, and the road and traffic conditions ahead, decide whether it is appropriate to accelerate away from the hazard.

Choose an appropriate point to accelerate safely and smoothly; adjust the amount of acceleration to the circumstances.
